At some point in your life, you have heard of Miley Cyrus or Lady Gaga. They are the fun and controversial celebrities everyone has an opinion about. They both continue to release new albums and maintain their bold styles, and are great examples of what actions to take in public relations. Specifically, both do very well when it comes to social media and interacting with fans.
Most of you probably think that Miley’s reputation is a disaster. However, her transition from Disney to former judge on “The Voice” is memorable. Everything she did was to get away from her old Disney image and attract a new audience. Her hair cut, tattoos, new music and twerking wasn’t directed towards little kids. All of that was Miley expressing her new self. Overall, she didn’t want to always be remembered as Hannah Montana. After her twerking, she was famous on Google, Billboards and Twitter. After researching and reading many articles, it can be said that Miley Cyrus and public relations do have a lot in common.
She responds quickly and addresses anyone that criticizes her. Even after going viral, she still keeps up to date with her social media. Most importantly, Miley knew which target audience she wanted to attract. Most of the people against her were people 40 years or older. They claim that she was “inappropriate.” Yet she would really only be inappropriate to children watching Disney. Her twerking was targeted towards young adults. As controversial as you think she was, she sold it well.
Selling controversy can also be in Lady Gaga’s journey. She has been well known for her crazy outfits, including her meat dress. Throughout her career, Lady Gaga has put her fans first. She has built a community of trust and names her audience “little monsters.” She has focused in on building relationships with people who are considered influencers. These influencers have promoted her fame and music. She has thanked and praised her friends through social media outreaching. She has sent her fans pizza for waiting on lines to see her. Another example would be her inviting the first couple of people on line to see her before her concerts. Lady Gaga has gone as far as getting a tattoo of her fans to show her appreciation.
Public Relations is about maintaining reputations, building relationships, handling crises, maintaining connections and promotion. It’s important to address a situation quickly and update your social media. Fan or not, the facts are that both Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga have done well when it comes to social media and public relations.
